A few months ago, I met a visionary genius named Echo Garrett. We were both at some mutual friends’ New Year’s Eve party and discussed a variety of subjects. Subsequently, she and her husband, John, took a writing workshop from me and the conversations continued. Echo told me about an intriguing idea for creating and encouraging community building amongst women by using “thoughtful leadership”; in other words, discussion with a purpose as opposed to being pointless (my description, not hers). This vision is titled www.hervoice.org and has wonderful potential to affect change (one of my favorite activities).

Through a series of discussion, Echo talked about using blog radio, a format in which I’m interested but new little about. One thing led to another, and a new blog radio show, “An Eclectic Collage”, was born! The purpose of this show is to bring a variety of women together to discuss different topics. Well today, we broadcast the first edition of “An Eclectic Collage” and the topic was near and dear to my heart: surviving cancer.

So today we brought together a group of six women ranging in age from 16 to 73. Most were breast cancer survivors with the rest being leukemia, ovarian or thyroid cancer survivors. I am the thyroid cancer survivor. Different cancers, different ages, different treatments and yet many similar themes: facing death, surprises about support received, etc.
